Site plan in Ireland

Irish planning applications must use Ordnance Survey mapping from Tailte Éireann. You mark up the site location map yourself; the site layout plan is drawn on top of it.

Can you draw it yourself in Ireland? #

Partly. The applicant or their agent marks up the official Ordnance Survey map, and you may draw a simple site layout plan yourself. In practice the detailed drawings that accompany a planning application are usually prepared by an architect or architectural technician — and for anything beyond simple work, that is the sensible route.

Create your site layout plan right here on the website in a few steps #

What Ireland requires #

Local authorities require large-scale Ordnance Survey mapping from Tailte Éireann. Tailte Éireann was established on 1 March 2023 under the Tailte Éireann Act 2022, merging the Property Registration Authority, the Valuation Office and Ordnance Survey Ireland into the national mapping and cadastral authority.

Site location map:

  • Scale not less than 1:1000 in urban areas or 1:2500 in rural areas.
  • Site outlined in red; other land in the applicant's ownership in blue; wayleaves in yellow.

Site layout plan:

  • Shows features within 100 m of the site.

Where to get the base map #

Order a Planning Pack from Tailte Éireann or an authorised vendor. It contains a large-scale site map (1:1000 urban, 1:2500 rural) plus a 6-inch record place map at 1:10,560. Maps must come from Tailte Éireann or an authorised vendor — other sources are not accepted.

How to submit #

Applications go to your local authority. Many councils accept submissions through their own online planning portal.
